Remember when you dreamed about being where you are now? What did you have to do to get where you are today? Did you ever congratulate yourself?

I remember what I used to dream about. Publishing a book, maintaining a growing website, having healthy relationships, landing a full-time job in my career straight out of college… you know things like that. I used to think that was it. My mind didn’t go much beyond those things. However, I realized those were just the beginning. Years ago, you couldn’t tell me otherwise.

Seriously take this moment to congratulate yourself. Think about how much you’ve learned and how much you’ve grown. Chances are you have reached a milestone without even realizing it. That’s what dawned on me the other day as I was thinking to myself, look how far I’ve come.

These things I worked so hard for and dreamed about, are actually my reality now! And guess what, while I love what I’ve become and what I’ve accomplished, I still want more for myself. I have more plans. I can imagine the path I’m going on next because I still have so much to do. But first I just had to reflect and remind myself of where I came from to show me where I am going. So just pause and think about it — give yourself some credit! We have persevered!

I was feeling discouraged because I felt like I was being pulled in many different directions. Then it hit me… Plazz you’ve made your dreams come true. You used to think about doing these things! So many dreams of what I want to accomplish overcrowd my mind. And it can be overwhelming but just know the dreams and constant chase for improvements are never going to stop. They aren’t supposed to!

It’s important for us to always remember what we’ve become and what we’ve accomplished, especially when we are feeling discouraged and overwhelmed. We are wiser, stronger, and better than we were before. That is something to be proud of. I kicked that discouragement in the pants! You deserve to know you are making progress. If you’re anything like me, you have to stop being so hard on yourself all the time. Give yourself some credit! I just wanted to remind you.

Sometimes it feels like

Like I’m drowning in my own fears

Fears of letting you down

Fears of not being enough

Fears of change

And every time I come up for air

They pull me back down

Under the surface

Where I scream but you can’t hear me

And they are empty

Hallow

I don’t know where they come from

Or when they will leave me alone

I don’t want you to wake up one day

And realize I’m not what you want

That I can’t do all the things you want

I don’t want to give you all of me

More than me

To still come up short

Because those videos, Instagram, our generation – they are telling us to be broken

I don’t want you to hear them

I don’t want you to think they’re right

Because I’m not those girls in the videos

I’m not the girls you see on Instagram

I don’t hide in make-up and bundles of weave

Should I?

My bottom isn’t so big I have to squat to fit into my jeans

Should it be?

I’m not shaped like a coke bottle

I don’t have a perfect life – never have.

You are the closest I’ve got to perfect.

And my fear is that you’ll hurt me

If I don’t beat you to it

I don’t want you to wake up and realize I have all these broken parts

That you cannot put back together

That I’m not enough

Because sometimes it’s seems like it’s too good to be true

Why do I have to find something wrong?

Can you really heal these wounds?

Because even I can’t answer these questions I try to chase out of the back of my mind.

Are you ready to have me– all of me?

Even the broken parts?

I am made up of a million little broken pieces

Thousands of times I’ve put myself back together

I’ve lost pieces of me along the way and can’t find them

That’s why I keep falling apart right in front of you

And I am so thankful you know how to put me back together every time

I don’t know who need to read this today but here it is!

One of my followers posted a comment that sparked my attention recently. Their comment had to do with my constant hustle and the rate of my content uploading on my social media pages and website. They basically said I deserve to call myself a writer! And it just had me thinking, authors, poets, and people in general, ignore the signs showing them that they need a break. Or we keep it to ourselves when feeling overwhelmed instead of venting. But I am not keeping it in at this time. I AM OVERWHELMED – NOW MORE THAN EVER. Most of you don’t know. In fact, it’s not something I would normally admit. But the truth is, I have been overwhelmed with juggling so many things! I graduated from college, moved to a new state and started my career with a new full-time job. And guess what? During all the working, moving, and learning, I still have to maintain all my author profiles by trying to post every day, write content for my site (like what you’re reading right now) advertise my book, and start my next one. Not to mention I just started my own show, Plazz’s Panel where I discuss and read some of my work — Whew! The list goes on and on. But there are three things that keep me sane.

  1. Stay Positive
  2. Stay Focused
  3. Stay Strong

And don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining. These are great things to be tired from but sometimes I don’t want to do anything but write. I don’t want to go to work, I don’t want to do the dishes, I don’t want to talk to anyone or exercise. I just want to write — that’s it. But I can’t I have to do so many other things and find time to do this.

When I get weary, I remember why I am doing all of it. Success isn’t going to just fall in our laps. We have to work hard for everything. And while we feel overwhelmed trying to keep up with life, we can’t forget about our dreams. That’s all I am trying to do is get closer to my dreams. It’s like there’s an ongoing itch we have to keep scratching. But please do me a favor, remember that I am human and you are too. It’s okay if we get tired, frustrated, and sleep in a little more instead of running errands on our day off. What matters is that we are trying! So we have to keep trying and even if our pace today is a little slower than other days — at least you can say you gave it your all. Oh well. My mom always says to take it one day at a time and as I am getting older I can see why she says that. If you get wrapped up in all the things you have to do, you’ll be running around like a chicken with your head cut off. Which is what I feel like! But remember those three things. Remember to not beat yourself up if you didn’t do something you needed to get done today, don’t forget about the goals you are working towards, and don’t give up! Stay positive, stay focused, and stay strong!

Home is a place of purity –a reflection of you and what you think is important in your life! It is the sacred place to unwind from the world’s craziness, to be yourself, to refresh, and to create happy memories. Home is the key to our functionality. So why wouldn’t you protect it? You make your home special by emphasizing your values, so that you’re happy to call it yours. Truth is, the home, its vibes, environment, and its memories, are what keeps us whole or tears us apart. We really need to protect and cherish our homes because they are impactful to our lives and more so than we think. And I don’t mean just projecting it with alarms, I mean its well-being — its atmosphere. A detrimental break-in demolishing your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health can happen in your home too and chances are, you aren’t prepared. The devil and his demons are hard at work breaking into homes stealing happiness, love, and peace everyday!

This is what I mean:

  1. Be aware of the vibes you bring or keep in your home. Okay so what do I mean by vibes exactly? A vibe is an atmosphere or person’s emotional state. A vibe is felt by others and it lingers. This is definitely number one for me. I strive everyday to make my home comforting, inspiring, loving, and genuine. However, it makes no sense for me to work this hard (or you) if I am just going to invite in a negative vibe! So always be paying attention to the type of people and attitude you bring inside. Vibes are visitors and sometimes they stay a little longer than expected… so don’t bring in unwanted guests. And I know you’ll bring in funky vibes from work and not be in the best mood sometimes, but if your home has a warm, relaxing, and loving feel to it, those negative vibes will fall right off of you! See what I mean?
  2. You are a product of your environment (home). Number one and two kind of go hand-in-hand. Surround yourself with what you value and what you want to be. Whatever keeps you sane and dedicated to your dreams, keep it around you. And make sure they are always visible, because “if it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind!”. If you are an artistic person, surround yourself with paintings, bright colors, and things that make you want to bring out your creativity as an artist. If you value your religion, surround yourself with bibles and even little Buddha statues if that’s what you’re into. If you want to be a professional ballerina, surround yourself with posters and ways to become that. For instance, I am someone who values God, my career as a writer, and my happiness. So, I have a lot of my favorite bible quotes written down, journals and books around the house, and pictures of me and my loved ones. Whenever, I feel slightly discouraged or unmotivated, I read these books, write in these journals, pray, and look at smiling pictures — relaxing, refreshing, and inspiring me. You become the person you really are when you are at home, so why not make it the best you?
  3. Create memories at home that will last a lifetime. Memories are what gives life meaning. Watch your baby take their first steps down the hallway. Watch your favorite movies with your spouse. Laugh really hard until wine comes out of your nose. Learn a new dance move right in the middle of your living room floor. Scale your first fish. Memories like this make our heart melt. I promise you these will be the things you cherish forever. And no matter where you go, you will always remember them. “Home is where the heart is!”.
  4. Emphasize all aspects of your health. Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health are all equally important in their own ways. So find a way to be healthy in all of them everyday at home. Cook meals that are good for your body, detoxify your skin, appealing to your physical health. And read or listen to something positive appealing to your mental and spiritual health. Maybe talk to your significant other or sibling about how you really feel about things to appeal to your emotional health. Find your own special ways to stay healthy because when we’re out in the world all day, we don’t always make the most healthy choices.

I hope these things I’ve mentioned help you realize your home’s importance and remind you of the different type of protection it needs.

This one is for my sisters

My black women

Who stand strong

And never give in

Remember that you are one of a kind

And that our type of beauty is divine

No need to dissolve those curls

The curls link us to one another

No need to be like the other girls

We are incredible like our foremothers

Build your fathers and brothers because they need you

You can’t build them if you aren’t proud of you

Nails done by Koreans

Hair from Brazilians

Stop diluting who you are with other cultures

Start embracing and teach your daughters

We are beautiful– that even an understatement

Stop listening to the hatred

We need to build each other

No neck and eye rolls at the store

We are all the same

What is the jealousy for?

There’s this unspoken war

Between us but we shall unite

This one is for my sisters

My black women

Do stand strong

Don’t ever give in

Soon to be the last day of the month

The month we are allowed to remember

The month we are to embrace all that we are

The month this country tries to heal our scars

But my brothers and sisters

You shall not forget who you will always be

Stand this proud always — February to February

“Know the Past, Shape the Future”

Decide to be proud 365 days a year

Your children become what you mirror

Teach them how to protect their unique wounds

That this month is noticed, but that we shall never lose focus

You know it’s real ’cause it’s perfect and it wasn’t planned

We had no idea how God was dealing his hand

We vibe and relate on so many levels

From the color of our skin to the way our hair grows

You are my lover but black says you’re my brother

No love can replace or subdue

The common history I have with you

Strong love

Because of what our ancestors went though

You know it’s real when you hold him and you can feel his pain

A colored man in a white land

In their eyes we are the same

Unwanted

Terrifying

But our love isn’t haunted

And we are electrifying

We are the image of black love

The kind people speak of

When the world says you’re a criminal — I will hold you tightly

When the news is subliminal — I’ll prepare you for it wisely

The bond

The bond they are trying to rip apart

But you are like me

You have scars on your heart

Only I can heal them daily

We are entangled because of our pigmented skin

You can never run from me because together we win
